Unique PE offers students the opportunity to experience outdoor and indoor activities that teach compassion, focus, team building, and all the SEL competencies through mindful strategies. Ross Ryan MEd, and Maria Bidelman LCSW, MEd., teamed up to provide a different physical education curriculum to students at the alternative high school in District 155 in Crystal Lake, IL. This relatively low-cost course partners with the Crystal Lake Park District to provide hands-on learning experiences like Archery, Fishing, Orienteering, Nature Appreciation Hikes, and Wilderness Safety. Students travel to community sites to extend their learning. When weather permits, activities are outside. Indoor activities include team-building brain games and traditional team sports.
